Day Fourteen Forty Days of Focus: Relationships

Commitment. Without it, marriage really doesn't work. Sadly, many people think marriage is built on love. As children, we sing, "First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the baby in the baby carriage." As adults, we don't sing the song, but we still believe it. Then, when the loving feeling is gone we wonder if there's anything left of the marriage. The biblical picture of marriage includes a biblical understanding of love. Love is much more than a feeling. In the Greek and Hebrew there are several different kinds of love, each with a different word to describe them. In short, love is a package deal that includes, commitment love, friendship love and romantic love. Any one of these can fuel a marriage but only when all three are present can marriage be the way God designed your heart to experience it with joy. Biblical love can say, "For better or for worse, till death do us part." Emotional love can only say, "As long as I feel like I do today, I'll be here for you." Commitment in marriage is key. Good character is doing the right thing even when you don't feel like it.
